“Do I look non-binary enough? Maybe I didn’t tell you. Maybe you called me “he” in a conversation and I said nothing – I didn’t want to burden you, I didn’t want to make you feel bad. Did I wear the right outfit? I just try to look the way I feel, I want to be free and beautiful! Who can say I’m wrong, would you? Do you believe I am just one of two? Are you gonna fuss?
Who’s Gonna Fuss uses polaroid emulsion lifts to visually explore feelings of dysphoria. Each photograph depicts someone who identifies as non-binary, meaning that their gender identity does not fall within the binary of male or female. These fragile images are ever changing, cracking and twisting since the moment they’re pulled from the development base. I saw myself in this beautiful chaos, recognizing that a state of flux – even my own gender dysphoria – can itself be calming and precious. One day I feel masculine, the next I feel feminine, and the next I do not know. . . how wonderful and strange it is to be anything at all!” – Theodore Zinn, Drexel University 25′
